MY COLLEGE JOURNEY

I started my college academia studying Biology at Kutztown University. I enjoyed my time at Kutztown, but at the time, I was unsure about what I wanted my future career to look like. I had always had an interest in the human body and how the body functioned, and I knew I wanted to make the change to study Exercise Science; however, this was not an option at Kutztown. I transferred to Raritan Valley Community College and attended for one semester as an Exercise Science major. I took classes such as Strength and Conditioning and Cardiovascular Conditioning and loved learning about how the body adapts to exercise. My time at RVCC reassured me that I wanted to study Exercise Science, so I decided to transfer to Rutgers University, because I knew they had an excellent Department of Kinesiology and Health.

Transferring schools was not a smooth journey, and it was difficult for me to adjust. However, I pushed my way through and took summer classes and never gave up. It has been a stressful four years, but I am glad I decided to attend Rutgers University. At Rutgers, I was challenged by coursework, and I had to adjust to different living situations. I had to learn how to navigate through the Rutgers campuses. I had to balance coursework and an internship, and I am now adapting to online learning due to COVID-19.

There have been many ups and downs throughout my time at Rutgers, but I have learned to be tenacious and to keep pushing myself even when motivation to keep going is low. Similar to my college journey, many people deal with akin situations regarding their own fitness journey. It may take several tries and different approaches to find what works for them. I would like a career in the fitness industry to teach others to keep moving forward through stressful times and to help others achieve their personal best. My time at Rutgers University has prepared me academically for a career in the fitness industry, and I would like to share the knowledge I have learned at Rutgers with others.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

  • The physiological effects of exercise for patients with diabetic retinopathy as well as the processes of vascular remodeling and exercise induced angiogenesis, where the body forms new blood vessels to adapt to increased blood flow throughout the body as a result of exercise training

  • Strength training for children ages seven and up is both effective and safe if done properly with supervision

  • The benefits of mobile technology for the promotion and maintenance of healthy exercise habits

  • The physiology of bone remodeling and osteoporosis and I have researched how exercise helps to reduce the risk of falling for seniors suffering from osteoporosis

From a young age, I have been passionate about learning how the human body functions. The Rutgers Department of Kinesiology and Health has given me the opportunity to learn in depth about the positive impacts exercise has on the body. My internship experience helped me apply my knowledge of exercise science and helped me confirm that I would like a career in the fitness industry where I will have the opportunity to help others achieve their fitness goals.
